Middle School Departmentalization
Grades 5-8 at Grace Lutheran School are departmentalized.
This means that students will have several teachers
during their school day that are specialists in a
particular field of study. In order to maintain a
family-like atmosphere, each class also has a home-room
teacher charged with monitoring the over-all academic,
social, and spiritual progress of individual students
as well as the class as a whole.
Bible Study 7/8
Students have confirmation with the pastor. The focus
and study is on the main parts of Luther’s Small
Catechism.
Bible Study 5/6
The religion curriculum used in fifth and sixth grade
is Voyages, published by Concordia Publishing House.
The fifth grade curriculum emphasizes the Old Testament
history and the sixth grade curriculum thoroughly
examines the many stories of Jesus’ life as
found in the book of Matthew. Students will learn
God’s desires through the daily reading of scripture.
The students are shown the connections between God’s
promises and actions in these stories and their fulfillment
through Christ. Within the contexts of the lessons,
students are taught key concepts of faith such as
Law and Gospel, fruit of the Spirit, confession, repentance,
forgiveness, and grace. The students are encouraged
to put these concepts into action in their lives.
Memory Work and Chapel
All students in the 5th and 6th grades will have
weekly memory work assigned by their homeroom teacher.
The 7th and 8th graders will have memory work every
day. Memory work includes passages from the Bible
and selected works from Luther’s Small Catechism.
All Grace students attend a weekly chapel service
on Wednesday morning.
History 7/8
The seventh and eighth grades study Texas history
and world geography and cultures. Throughout the two
years, the students will study the following themes:
principles of history, geography, government, and
economics and social studies skills. Throughout the
year projects are assigned and at least one field
trip is planned.
History 5/6
The fifth and sixth grade curriculum studies American
History from the time of the first Americans, how
trade led to the conquest and settlement of the Americas,
how the 13 colonies were established, the events that
led to the Revolution, the Constitution, the Civil
War, the Industrial Revolution, WW I, WW II, the Great
Depression and how the U.S. interacts with its neighbors.
Throughout the year projects are assigned and at least
one field trip is planned.
