Middle
School Departmentalization
Grades 5-8 at Grace Lutheran School are departmentalized.
This means that students will have several teachers
during their school day that are specialists in a
particular field of study. In order to maintain a
family-like atmosphere, each class also has a home-room
teacher charged with monitoring the over-all academic,
social, and spiritual progress of individual students
as well as the class as a whole.
A Beka Science
Science 7/8
The seven and eighth grades study Science Order and
Reality and Matter and Motion in God’s Universe
alternately. The text focuses on the belief that God
is the Creator of the Universe and that science is
the way for man to control the physical world. Throughout
the two years, students will study soil science, plants,
the human body, principles of physical science, atmospheric
science, the weather, classification, microscopy,
Creation, and insects, astronomy, matter and motion,
electricity and magnetism and Creation.
Science 5/6
The fifth and sixth grades study Observing God’s
World and Investigating God’s World alternately.
The text presents the universe as the creation of
God. Throughout the two years, students will learn
about plants, animals, matter, energy, light, minerals,
invertebrates, forces of the earth, the universe and
space travel.
Saxon Math
Grace Lutheran School has adopted the Saxon Math
series in Kindergarten through eighth grade. Students
in grades 5-8 have the opportunity to test into their
ability level in math. Each spring returning students
are tested for placement for the next school year.
New students will be tested in the fall, before school
starts. Students may be placed one grade level ahead
as deemed necessary by the middle school math teachers.
Algebra I
Eighth grade students who test into this section
of math will have the opportunity to complete this
first-level, high school Algebra course before going
into high school. The Algebra I book seeks to further
introduce and practice algebraic reasoning. Some of
the major concepts covered are: fraction review, geometry,
evaluation of algebraic expressions, order of operations,
exponents, rational and abstract equations, and quadratic
equations.
Algebra ½
Seventh graders who test up will be formally introduced
into beginning algebra. Concepts covered in this book
are: reviews of addition, subtraction, multiplication,
and division of whole numbers and fractions, geometry,
area and volume of geometric figures, equation solving,
and the Pythagorean theorem.
Math 8/7
In Math 8/7 many pre-algebraic and geometric concepts
are covered. Some of the concepts include: properties
of operations, place values, lines and angles, adding,
subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions and
decimals, geometric formulas, proportions, graphs
and graphing, algebraic addition, including signed
numbers, scientific notation, metric system, proportions,
and algebraic equations. Unless tested into, this
book will be skipped.
Math 6/5 and 7/6
Fifth and sixth graders will continue studying whole
number operations, fraction operations, geometry,
area of geometric figures, probability, Pi, and simple
algebraic equations
