Bible
Study
The Bible study program is based on the Concordia
Publishing House, Voyages curriculum, which centers
around the joy of being forgiven children of God and
accepted with unconditional love by Jesus. The children
worship God through song and through prayer. They
learn what God’s promises for His people have
been in the past and about His willingness to act
on behalf of His people today through Old and New
Testament Bible stories. The children also worship
at a weekly all school chapel service.
Language
Arts
Kindergarteners are exposed to a print-rich environment
through both the Harcourt and Alpha time reading series.
Kindergarteners become familiar with capital and lowercase
letters, the sounds the letters make and how those
26 letters are written. The D’Nealian style
of handwriting is taught. Opportunities are given
to each child to begin to recognize words that have
meaning to them such as their first and last names,
their classmates’ names, the eight basic color
words, a series of sight words and words introduced
in their pre-decodable books. The children have the
opportunity to create and write their own stories
through writing center activities and through the
Storybook Weaver computer program.
Math
The Saxon math series is used throughout the year
in Kindergarten. The children participate in hands-on
activities. This involves number concepts, counting
skills, patterning, sorting, number recognition, measuring
and spatial concepts.
Science
The Discovery Works science curriculum is used throughout
the year and topics covered in Kindergarten include
life science, physical science, earth science and
health and human body science. The program promotes
the development of the processes that are integral
to science: observing, communicating, classifying,
measuring, comparing and predicting.
Social
Studies
Kindergarten students learn about themselves, their
families and the world around them. Specific Social
Studies topics are studied in correlation with the
curriculum themes. Weekly Reader is also a part of
the curriculum on a weekly basis.
Art
Children are encouraged to create their own unique
works of art through experiences with colors, lines,
shapes, patterns, textures and designs. There are
opportunities to work with a variety of medium: pencils,
crayons, markers, paints, types of paper, scissors,
glue, etc.
Computer
The Kindergarteners
are introduced to a variety of computer programs during
the school year that reinforces what has been taught
in the core subjects. The children have daily opportunities
to learn how a computer works and how information
can be collected through the Internet.
